Blog Tour: Off the Hook by Laura Drewry

Welcome to The Buoys, a West Coast haven where love comes in with the tide. Perfect for readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, the Fishing for Trouble series features three unforgettable brothers—each of whom is a great catch.

Major league pitcher Liam O’Donnell knows his best days are probably behind him, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to retire and become a fishing guide. Still, after all the time he’s spent chasing his dreams, he owes it to his brothers to pull his weight around the lodge. The Buoys is their father’s legacy, and they can’t let some developer take it from them. The one snag Liam isn’t counting on is a blast from the past: his ex-wife.

The moment Kate Hadley steps out of the seaplane, she knows this assignment is going to be trickier than she thought. She has to persuade the owners to sell—and one of them is Liam O’Donnell. Ten years ago, she made the biggest mistake of her life when she married Liam during a fling in Vegas. Now he’s her only lifeline in the middle of nowhere. Kate’s trying to keep things cool, but Liam just reminds her of the scorching few nights they spent together—and tempts her to make new memories that are just as steamy as the old.

They were almost to her cabin when she shocked the hell out of him by slipping her hand under his arm and nudging his shoulder with hers.

“You’re still a hotshot pitcher, you know. Don’t talk about that in the past tense.”

Liam blinked hard, then leaned in and pressed a slow kiss against her cheek. Half an inch, that’s how close he was to those soft, warm lips he remembered all too well, but no matter how much he ached to taste them again, he forced himself to pull back and smile down at her.

Besides his agent—who didn’t count, because Liam paid him to say it—Kate was the first and only one to even suggest he might have something left, and if she’d said it any other time or any other way, he might not have believed she was sincere.

But looking at her now, with her foot up on the porch, ready to go inside, there wasn’t the slightest trace of doubt in her eyes, just those damn bits of amber flickering like little beacons.

“I, uh . . .” Blowing out a hard breath, Liam shoved both hands through his hair, locked his fingers together, and took a step back. “I better go. It’d really screw things up here if we woke up married tomorrow.”

“Right. Good thinking,” she said, her mouth curling into a slow, knowing smile. “’Cause I promise you this, I won’t be nearly as nice the next time you divorce me.”

Liam and Kate were married for a brief moment in time a decade ago. They never thought they'd ever see each other again but then they do. Kate's job sends her to help get a remote fishing retreat back into visitor-friendly shape so her boss can take buy them out. When she gets there Kate finds out that her ex-husband is one of the owners she's going to be working alongside. Awkward. For Kate, she's determined not to fail. She's worked her way from nothing all the way up to where she is now, living comfortably and in position to further her career. She won't let her ex-husband's sudden reappearance in her life ruin anything. For Liam, his head hurts. His career as a major-league pitcher is on the rocks and he's got a mess of a fishing retreat to deal with. On top of all his problems, his ex-wife shows up. So now he has to deal with the feelings he had for her that he'd merely pushed aside ten years ago. There's a classic push and pull going on between Kate and Liam throughout the story. But with the time they're forced to spend together, they grow together and learn about each other in ways that Vegas didn't allow. This was a heartwarming story that really tugs on your heartstrings. Home is really where the heart is.

How Forever Feels by Laura Drewry

From USA Today bestselling author Laura Drewry comes a warm and witty new Friends First novel—perfect for readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery. How Forever Feels is a sweet tale about the one that got away . . . and the one that came back.

Maya McKay’s heart is as big as Jack Rhodes’s shoulders are broad. Their chemistry is out of control, but it could never work between them because Jack is more than just best friends with her cheating ex-husband—they’re like brothers. Maya, the sensitive, practical florist, has given up on love and is ready to settle for like. But now that Jack’s around again, he’s stirring up old feelings—and turning Maya’s fantasies into irresistible reality.

Jack blew his chance with Maya years ago when he stepped aside for his best friend, Will, and he’s still kicking himself about it. Maya was promised forever once before, and she got burned. But when Jack realizes that second chances aren’t going to fall out of the sky, he seizes the moment—and the woman he’s always loved—to show her how forever truly feels.

Maya McKay is in one tough situation. In her shoes, I'd be totally torn. Jack, being her ex-husband's best friend is pretty much the biggest taboo you could find--maybe only topped off by a brother. ANYWAYS. I loved the angle of the story because of that. Why not find love in the most unexpected place? I say it makes Jack that much more worthy of Maya's time now--clearly he knows what he wants and he's loyal to that! Laura's writing in this book is consistent with the writing in the other books of this series. I actually can't choose one book that I've liked more than the others. Definitely a solid finish to a great series. I definitely recommend!

Accidentally in Love by Laura Drewry

Ellie Palmer and cops don’t mix, and getting pulled over by Officer Brett Hale—again—doesn’t help. Neither does being forced to take a safe-driving course with him. Brett’s by-the-book attitude leaves Ellie ice-cold, and his rock-hard body won’t change that. Still, the more time she spends with the guy, the more she finds herself warming up to his unexpected charms.

Even though Brett comes off like a boy scout, Ellie has sparked something he wants badly enough to get him to rethink his past mistakes. But when her ex shows up, Brett makes it his mission to keep Ellie safe in the here and now. His gut tells him the guy’s trouble, and Ellie must agree, because she doesn’t complain when Brett pulls her close. To keep her safe, though, he’ll have to choose between breaking her heart . . . and breaking the rules.

So we have here a story of two very different individuals that are thrown together. Ellie hates everything Officer Brett is on paper (and for somewhat good reason). So when a whole slew of events lead up to her having to spend more time with him, she's super-annoyed. Despite her preconceived notions of him and against her every fibre, Ellie finds herself warming up to Brett the more time she has to spend with him. Brett, who can't help his protective nature, takes it upon himself to keep Ellie safe when her crazy ex shows up in town...but then things get complicated as the lines blur when he goes under cover as her boyfriend and he gets to know her more.

I loved the dynamic between Ellie and Brett. Her hating him and him trying to break through those walls...inevitably leading to her not being able to help herself. It's a cute story. Brett really fills the alpha/protector role really well. He's written in as a damned sexy man (maybe it's because I subconsciously love chivalrous men...)--and one in uniform, at that! The story was well written and easy to get through. It was a good continuation to the series (I previously read Plain Jayne) and I'd definitely read the other books going on these two books.

Plain Jayne by Laura Drewry

Having lived most of her adolescent life thinking that her grandmother loathed her existence, Jayne Morgan is super confused when she's left everything her grandmother owned. She returns to her childhood home to sort things through and finds herself going through an emotional rollercoaster trying to understand the bits and pieces her grandmother had left behind.

The first person Jayne bumps into when she gets home is her former best friend, Nick Scott. Though the two of them had spent years and miles apart, Nick has always loved Jayne to pieces. So how awkward was it when Nick insisted that she bunk with him while she restored her grandmother's apartment/store front? Only awkward for Jayne, apparently! With the help of Nick, Jayne is determined to reopen her grandmother's book store and create a home for herself. All the while, she has to deal with her feelings for Nick that haven't seemed to subside over the years. Nick doesn't seem to see it, though, so she's got to deal and move on. The more time they spend together, the more she realizes she feels for Nick, so does Nick wake up in time to realize what he's got in front him? Or does Jayne move on, without him?

As much as I love a good story about friends falling in love, I didn't love how stupid Nick seemed to be. Yes, I get it, he's male but it doesn't excuse his behaviour. From the beginning, we see that Nick is completely disrespects his current girlfriend, Lisa. Then we go on to see how he completely disregards anybody's feelings except for his own!! I totally don't think he deserved Jayne's love in any sort of way. Jayne, however, I couldn't help but feel sorry for from the get go. She came from a relationship that went totally awry to a town where she has to face people from a past she wanted nothing but to get away from. She rises, though, and I love that.

Plain Jayne was a cute story about the girl next door who, as always, gets overlooked until she grows up and, just before it's too late, she rises above and lands her guy. It was an easy read to get through, though, there were some parts that baffled me (why was it necessary to go through Maya destroying her home?).
