Lachlan faces us and goes on.
“The initial assessment of the information she stole shows no
major impact on Jackson Corporation. The surveillance videos and audio prove
I’m a hard-ass worker”—we chuckle along with him—“I empathize with her and her
line of descendants’ plight.”
Lachlan pauses to glance at each of us before he continues, “I
propose Kat leaves Scotland in one week and she never returns without our
advance knowledge. Her family—if truly uninvolved—can remain. She can keep the
money Stewart paid her since she used it to support her family. However, we
will monitor her activities. Should she hack anyone else, we will press charges.
Thoughts?”
Again, everyone speaks at once. But Lachlan calls for Leonie
first.
“Kat’s comments about the posh
life and how impressed she was by the things we do make sense now,” she
says. The girls nod and murmur their agreement. “I noticed she became less
guarded the more time she spent with us. She was wistful when we last spoke
about the upcoming holidays in Capri and Verbier during Labor Day. Kat listened
raptly. Perhaps she saw her error but didn’t know what to do to fix the
situation. And for Chet to threaten to kill Kat so publicly, well… Mon Dieu!”
Aunt Lucie speaks next and agrees with Leonie’s assessment. But
adds she doesn’t trust Kat, and she would have to prove herself before she
could gain it back. Our mother expresses a similar sentiment.
Lachlan hears everyone out, then turns to me.
“Your thoughts, Harris?” He asks.
I nod and respond.
“On a personal level, Kat fooled me once and will not have the opportunity to do it again. From a business perspective, I take responsibility for not paying attention to Jackson Corporation’s tech activity. So, as much as I want to blame Kat, I have to share some with her. Fortunately, she didn’t access pertinent information. To press charges makes it public, and you don’t want Jackson Corporation to appear vulnerable. That would give hackers ideas. At the same time, it reflects poorly on STEELE Technology and Cyber Security’s ability to protect our clients. So, from a selfish standpoint, you should not press charges. Banish her. I did already.”
